You hold a gift.
A pulse in your hands that could heal, teach, ignite wonder.
You know you’re here to bring something to life.
Not everyone can channel vision into form, spark laughter, or guide someone home to themselves.
And yet between you and those who need your gift, a gap remains.
That gap is Marketing.
How do you share what you carry in a way that honors who you are, what you offer, and how you practice?
Because you know marketing isn’t about snagging the sale.
It’s about how you stand in the world.
And too often, the maps we’re handed are rooted in old tactics. Science braided with sweet-talk. Psychology twisted into payouts.
You’ve felt it yourself.
- You’ve whispered “I don’t want to miss out…” as your eyes lock on the countdown timer.
- You’ve hit GO on the promise, “This one secret will change everything.”
- You’ve noticed the row of happy faces beneath the words: “Join 10,000 others already inside.” and felt the tug to be part of something.
And here you stand. On the other side. Not wanting to make anyone’s heart speed up, palms sweat, gut twist. But you’re told this is the only way. So you do the thing. Write the headline. Download the timer. Feel the slimy essence of it all the way through.
That’s when you remember it doesn’t have to be this way. No part of your soul-aligned business is predestined. Every step is a choice.
When you choose alignment with your very core, you pass that sovereignty on to others.
Luckily, all it takes to stand at the threshold of choice is a bit of behind-the-scenes understanding.
Traditional marketing methods are as old as the hills and twice as predictable.
In fact, much of what’s circulating right now has its roots in the trigger-driven philosophies of Direct Response Marketing. What makes it feel slimy is the under-handed use of behavioral psychology. They know how to get in our heads and make us do things we don’t want to do for reasons we can’t even explain to ourselves.
Beneath the tricks, three ancient currents move us still.
These primal human drivers thread their way through the philosophies of trigger-driven traditional marketing. When hidden, they manipulate. When seen, they clarify. And once you recognize them, the “ick” factor comes into focus and choice returns.
The Three Primal Drivers
These are not brash inventions of unethical marketers. They are the raw instincts that have always shaped human choice. Long before billboards or sales funnels, they guided every step, every decision. They are: Survival. Desire. Tribe.
They help us: Stay safe. Reach for more. Find our place.
We Strive for Survival:
Of course we’re pre-programmed to stay on the planet and the best way to do that is to avoid pain, risk, and loss. Whether we realize it or not, we are always scanning for safety and moving toward it. Naturally, this is the deepest root of human decision-making, thereby rendering it the most heavily exploited in traditional marketing.
The Manipulation:
Here we think of the singular Call To Action, mixed with Urgency and Social Proof with a Guarantee to back it up. This amalgamation is so familiar we hardly question it. But when we do, here’s how it looks:
The Call To Action is tinged with Command Language, which exploits our instinct to follow direct orders (do you stop to question it when someone yells “RUN”?).
Urgency is real. Things naturally end, supplies run out. If you don’t “Act Now” and harvest your crops, winter will set in and you won’t have food. Basic fact of survival. That’s the alarm bell that chimes when we see a ticking clock.
Social Proof is an automatic dynamic for survival in new situations. When presented with a novel offer – a product we don’t recognize or a brand we’re not familiar with – we look to others for signs of safety. Testimonials, celebrity endorsements, and white-coat clad people are authority stand-ins for the trusted tribe members of old. This is the paradigm for the entire “Influencer” industry.
While the Guarantee seems like a gift, it’s the icing on the cake for the snap decision. It’s called Risk Reversal. The smoke and mirror display appears to move the threat of loss from the buyer to the seller, thus clearing the final hurdle to the impulse buy. Paired with the command, the alarm bells, and the “trusted authority” smiling and pointing the way…we’ve snapped up something we probably don’t need, definitely won’t ever return and we feel relief because the emergency is over. We survived.
Even seemingly benign practices like “consistency” (backed by the algorithms on every social media platform) run on the psychological framework that familiarity tricks the brain into trust. Trust equals safety. Safety equals survival.
Here’s where your choice opens up.
The Antidote:
Knowing how these instincts are weaponized into high pressure sales gives you the perfect opportunity to honor each individual’s primal will to survive by consciously building safety, trust, and continuity that frees rather than coerces.
Every bit of your marketing message becomes a path lit rather than forced. Urgency softens into the natural closing of seasons. Scarcity into the truth that every container has its edge. Proof becomes transparency – your lived experience offered so others may choose with their eyes open. Risk reversal transforms into trust, honoring the sacredness of any exchange. Repetition finds its home in rhythm, mirroring the cycles of moon and tide. Framing expands into context, showing where your offering belongs in the greater landscape. And the Call To Action itself becomes an invitation. A simple open doorway that says only: if you feel called, enter here.
We Desire by Design:
If survival keeps us here, desire is what makes being here worth it. We are wired to move toward pleasure, beauty, transformation, and possibility. Desire is the fire that sparks art, invention, and intimacy. It’s the pulse that says more is possible than this moment holds. Naturally, this longing is the second great root of human decision-making, which makes it ripe for exploitation in traditional marketing.
The Manipulation:
Here we see the glittering promise of transformation, woven through offers, unique mechanisms, and storytelling designed to stir our hunger. The words whisper of a better body, a wealthier life, a secret path no one else knows. It feels magnetic, almost holy, and so familiar we rarely pause to question it. But when we do, here’s how it looks.
Desire is an emotional cocktail and humans are emotion-first decision makers. The Dual-Process theory in psychology shows us why. We carry two rivers of thought. One runs fast: automatic, emotional, subconscious. The other moves slow: deliberate, logical, conscious. Traditional marketing pours itself into the fast current, stirring impulse and habit because it converts quickly, even when it does not truly serve. Beer probably isn’t going to make you popular. Gum probably isn’t going to make you kiss better. But you have both in your cart because you’ve already bought the dream.
We desire to be seen and Unique Mechanisms make us stand out from the crowd. Simple words like patented, secret, exclusive, premium. These words directly link to our button finger and make that click happen at lightening speeds.
Who doesn’t love a good story? We’re hardwired for storytelling as a means of connection. Stories pull us in, tug on our hearts, invite us to identify with another and the brain is all but forgotten. Dramatized origin tales of overcoming hardship trigger sympathy. Relatable stories of struggle and magical solutions create longing. Testimonials cherry-picked for effect create false hope.
Then there is the freebie. Truthfully, this one shocked me. Just like the guarantee, to me, it has all the markings of an act of kindness, good faith. Really? It plays on a trigger so obvious it’s hidden: our desire for reciprocity. When someone gives us something, be it a morsel of decadent food or downloadable guide of 9 ways to train your puppy we feel indebted. Psychology says, we give back disproportionately. Free 3 day challenge? Buy the year-long program. Reciprocity is evolutionary glue. Give and Take builds trust. And most of us want to be seen as trustworthy.
The Antidote:
When You See, You Can Choose
Desire is a beautiful thing to feel when it is genuine. Sovereign use of our natural desire begins where you honor both the spark of feeling and the steadiness of logic. You let the uniqueness of your work reveal itself without inflation. Offering words that illuminate, not obscure with jargon. You share a story that lives and breathes, not tricks and leads astray. You give without tether, enjoying the virtues of the act itself.
When desire is wielded as bait, it burns the trail. When desire is acknowledged and respected, it lights the path.
We Belong to Tribe:
If survival roots us and desire pulls us forward, tribe is what weaves in between. We are born seeking connection, acceptance, inclusion. Belonging is safety multiplied, trust magnified, identity affirmed. It is the third great root of human decision-making, and therefore a popular tool in traditional marketing.
The Manipulation:
Here we find the glow of recognition, the curated faces of community, the promise of status or inclusion. Segmentation becomes a mirror for identity, shaping who we think we are by who we are told we stand with. It feels natural, almost inevitable, and so we rarely pause to question it. But when we do, here’s how it looks.
Popular marketing teaches to “speak to someone’s pain better than they can”, to call them out by occupation, interest or even weird social habits. This is affirmation of their identity and makes us stand up and say “that’s me!”.
Tactics like tallying new buyers, publicly welcoming those who just joined, or spotlighting who’s “inside” are all designed to trigger the fence-sitters. They exploit our deep need to be included. VIP experiences, “join the 1% at the top who…”, even the dare to be different campaigns take belonging to the next level. Not only are you included, but you are revered, elite, adored.
Being included feels fantastic, right? The “Ick” factor sets in because being included only when you fork over a hefty sum of cash isn’t really inclusion at all. It’s coercion backed by instinct to fit in for survival.
The Antidote:
You don’t want to use belonging as bait and it’s not natural anyway. It’s taught. Simply speak to people with respectful recognition, not bold intrusion. Think small town street or calling out to your neighbor. When you create community around your work like a sacred circle and your marketing as a current moving through the world, this changes everything. Then, you leave both open for those who resonate. Others can walk on by without remorse. No velvet ropes. No hidden costs for inclusion. Just the steady fire of communion, where each person’s choice remains intact, and belonging becomes what it was always meant to be: free, mutual, and alive.
The Choice is Yours
These principles are not, themselves, tricks. They are mirrors of how humans have always made decisions.
We seek safety because survival is our root.
We reach for the new because desire pulls us forward.
We long to belong because tribe weaves us together.
When these levers are pulled blindly, they distort. But when held in awareness, they steady the exchange. They stop being weapons of persuasion and become instruments of trust.
So you don’t have to trick, trap or tempt anyone. Ever.
What you carry within you is a living current. It is a pulse alive with healing, with teaching, with the power to wake in others what has slept too long. The real question has never been if it’s worth sharing, but how to let it move into the world without losing its integrity.
Now you know.
There is an avenue other than what is shouted at you from mainstream sources. You don’t have to cringe when you write, post or offer. You don’t have to market for performance or payout.
You simply stand in the world with your gifts .
Here I am.
If you feel called, come closer.
No deception. No manipulation. No Ick.
Only the clean current of recognition, one soul to another.
